My mom had German measles
during her ninth month of pregnancy. I was born totally deaf and I have been
deaf all my life. I was raised in North Carolina. In 1959, when I was five
years old, I went to the School for the Deaf in Morganton, N.C. and my favorite
teacher, Mrs. Brendle taught me how to speak and write English and many other
things to learn. Before I was in school I didn't know how to talk with my own
lips or use sign language and I only used body languages and gestures at home so
my parents would try to understand me and get the picture what I mean.

After school, I went home every month and saw my parents. I ran toward them and hugged them and I said "Mom and Daddy!" They looked at me crying and said "Oh baby, you can talk very basic words to us" and they were so proud of me to learn from my school, but the sad thing in my school was they didn't allow my parents to learn how to use sign language to communicate with me and must use oral communication with me and I didn't understand and it frustrated me because I did not understand them.

As I was growing up, I talked to my parents and sometimes they would talk with the very basic sign language and write notes and depend on what they said if it would make me understand or not. In 1965, I moved to the new deaf school in Wilson, NC and stayed there until 1972. I then went back to old deaf school in Morganton, NC and I graduated in 1975.

After graduation I got a job in Fayetteville, NC and
worked in Central Supply for eight years at Cape Fear Valley Hospital. I was
married to my hard of hearing husband and moved to Monroe, NC and had a few
different jobs until 1984 when I started living on SSDI because of my deafness
and I still have it for 19 years now. I didn't have any kids because I
lost two of them by tubal pregnancies twice.

In 2002, after my divorce from my first husband, a hearing man found me through
the web site "Jumpdates" on the internet. We talked for a couple months and I
would ride the Greyhound bus from Fayetteville, NC to Griffin, Georgia every 3
or 4 weeks and visit and teach him sign language. After about 6 months, we fell
in love and I lived with him there. About 6 months later, we moved to Washington
State. I am now married to my second husband, Lee Edwards, and live with him and
his oldest son. My husband has two sons.
I am deaf, very loyal, down to earth, friendly, I love to laugh, and I have a
sense of humor. I love going to fishing, swimming, camping, dancing, bowling,
biking, hiking, shopping, relaxing at beach, going to the park, traveling, flea
markets and antique stores.

I can feel the
beat and vibrations of the loud music. I love my two cats as my "family". I love
going places and hanging out with deaf friends and I love meeting new friends. I
have a brother and a sister and four step sisters. My communication is
using sign languages and using pen and paper to write back and forth using notes
to communicate with hearing people or sometimes I can use a lip-reading a little
and try to teach them how to use hand spelling and very basic sign language and
I love to help them learn.
